13 Reasons Why…

Dear WMTPS Community,

You may have recently read about a new television series entitled “13 Reasons Why”. Originally released as a book in 2007, this series is popular among teenage students and involves adult themes such as rape and suicide. I would encourage all parents to carefully monitor access to this program. The American Psychological Association states: “We do not recommend that vulnerable youth, especially those who have any degree of suicidal ideation, watch this series. Its powerful storytelling may lead impressionable viewers to romanticize the choices made by the characters. While many youths are resilient and capable of differentiating between a TV drama and real life, engaging in thoughtful conversations with them about the show is vital.”

Best,

  1. Rediculous, I watched the series and I personally feel EVERY teenager should watch. It is informative and shows the damage done by reckless behavior.

  2. I agree with Kim. Every teen should watch the series. It shows what actions, that may not mean much to the person doing them, forcast on others. Its a great series for suicide prevention and it is one of the very few realistic media images of the terrible reality that suicide is.

  3. I’m not only a WM mom of 3 but a trained psychotherapist with 18 years of experience and I feel this series is very well made. It has done exactly what it was meant to do. To get teens and families aware and talking about these very difficult topics. I encourage all parents to watch it first then watch with your teen children. After ” get talking ” !
We can’t avoid this any longer.
    Best of luck
